MI5 DG addresses Press Club Awards Lunch

The Director General of MI5, Andrew Parker, gave the keynote address at the 25th anniversary of the London Press Club Awards today (April 14). He spoke about the security situation in the UK, focusing on the threats posed by ISIL branches around the world (including Syria), and the capacity of the intelligence agencies to counter these threats.

He described the challenges posed by technological change – both as a result of the increasing difficulty in accessing terrorists’ communications, but also because of the sophistication of ISIL using social media for their own ends to spread extremist propaganda.

His address highlighted the fundamental importance of a free press and the role of MI5 in protecting the UK’s freedoms and democratic values, describing the high standards of professional ethics and rigorous oversight that are integral to MI5’s work.
