That is the question posed by neuroscientist, Dr Tara Swart, who is launching key research into the mental resilience of journalists.
There is intense pressure on journalists: daily or hourly deadlines; accountability and exposure; instant online feedback; being in the public eye; social media interaction; a culture of presumed excellence.
Despite this, and the meagre financial rewards (especially for the long hours involved), there are thousands of people trying to enter the profession each year, says Dr Swart, and they play an important role in a democratic society, holding government and business to account.
Dr Swart is fascinated by how the human brain works, specifically in people who have professions where mental resilience is essential, and through her study she aims to analyse why and how journalists cope so well with stress.
A leadership coach, author and medical doctor, Dr Swart works with some of the world’s most successful companies to help them achieve mental resilience, peak brain performance and, through this, a competitive edge.
By collating data from journalists across the media industry, she hopes to understand where the pressure points are and compare working in the different types of media.
